George Douglas Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll (1823–1900), a Scottish aristocrat, politician, intellectual and extensive landowner who in his lifetime saw major changes in land use, rising tenant expectations, overpopulation, famine, poverty and the emergence of tenants’ rights.
The talk focuses on how Argyll dealt with the tenants of Tiree during these challenging times. It considers Victorian expectations of how landowners should respond to famine, debt, crime, poverty, overcrowding, and resistance to change, and concludes by assessing Argyll’s stewardship of Tiree against both contemporary standards and the conduct of other landowners.
