The charitable objects of the Friends of Argyll Estates Archives are to promote, support, assist and improve the archive of the Campbell family, earls and dukes of Argyll, through the activity of a group of Friends; to advance education and to advance arts, heritage and culture.

Through their subscriptions, our Friends provide core funding which enables us to support the physical preservation of the collection and to apply for additional funding from grant-making charities and trusts. We bring members together for regular online seminars, arrange visits to places of interest and share research and activities through a newsletter twice a year, building a mutually supportive community.
Although the collection is physically based in Inveraray, it includes historical evidence for communities throughout Argyll (including Kintyre, Oban, Mull and Tiree), providing the stories of past people, places, local and national events. We use the collection to support outreach projects which we develop in partnership with local communities, enabling them to enhance their knowledge and understanding of their local history, and to support the creation of more cohesive communities with a shared sense of place and purpose.
We have delivered projects supporting mental health (funded by the Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund), which have enabled young people to explore their heritage and participate in performance (see www.tir-iseal.co.uk); and projects which promote the archive to communities throughout Argyll (Written in the Landscape).
Additionally, we provide volunteering opportunities for both the ‘local’ community (volunteers often travel a substantial distance to work with us) and the ‘remote’ community who share our love for this collection. These opportunities are open to young and old, and enable everyone to learn about their history in a warm and friendly environment. We support young people in work-experience placements, student internships and through accreditation schemes such as Archaeology Scotland’s Heritage Hero awards.
