Throughout the year there are a number of events for Friends. The group includes Friends from across the world, and while it is not possible for them to regularly join in local activities, they can join the group remotely, and be part of the proceedings.
Whatever the occasion, our gatherings are always convivial with opportunities to discuss our common or diverse interests. Members are given full details of all forthcoming events and can secure a place by booking. Find out how to become a member.
Seminars
A series of online Seminars is organised annually, taking place between late autumn and late springtime. They are held at various times on Fridays, enabling Friends from distant parts of the world to participate. Talks are based on research and illustrated by images of documents from the archive and are followed by lively questions and participation by the audience. If attendance on the day is not possible, recordings of seminars can be accessed at a more convenient time. Attendance is free to members of the Friends; non-members are welcome but asked to make a £10 donation.
Palaeography
During covid restrictions, an online group of Friends met to socialise on Friday mornings. These meetings developed to enable a group of enthusiastic volunteers to study and transcribe documents from the archive. Early documents and secretary hand can be intimidating, but members of the group work together and are very supportive. In addition, training sessions are available for beginners. Members attend by booking a place on the team when they are able to participate. There is satisfaction in helping make difficult documents more widely available, and the opportunity to develop skills, as well as a enjoying a great deal of fun in the process.
Music at the Archive
Although the archive is normally a quiet place, (unless someone has a “Eureka” moment which has to be shared) occasional noisy sessions are arranged at Cherry Park to celebrate traditional music. Bring your instrument, join in with singing, or just come along to listen and clap.
Field Trips
Days out are a highlight of the year for members and their guests. Visits are arranged to places related to Campbell or Argyll history including castles, stately homes, museums, and churches, enhanced by talks from experts. The day includes plenty of time for socialising and catching up with Friends, and of course stops for refreshments and lunch. There are usually two “outings” each year, but it is often possible to include extra events too good to miss.
