In a change from our advertised programme, our April presentation in the Friends seminar series 2024/25, will take place via zoom on Friday 25 April 2025 at 14:30 UK time when Kenneth Whyte will present ‘Duke Niall Revisited’.
Niall Diarmid Campbell, 10th duke of Argyll, (1872-1949) was a Highland landlord, member of the British aristocracy, antiquarian, family historian, amateur theologian and gardener (amongst his many other interests) who lived through two world wars and a period of technological and social change. Niall was fascinated by his own and other Campbell family histories, compiling extensive family pedigrees, compiling 20 volumes of abstracts of medieval writs and charters (greatly valued by academic historians of Highland history), transcriptions of estate records and family correspondence as well as his own extensive correspondence. In this seminar, Kenny Whyte will talk about Niall as he is revealed through the documents in the archives.
Kenneth has been employed as head tour guide at Inveraray castle since 2010. During the winter months, he has had the opportunity to study archive material originally the personal property of Duke Niall Campbell and will share some of his findings in this seminar.
The seminar will be given on Zoom.
Attendance at the seminar is free to members of the Friends. Non-members are asked to make a £10 donation to the Friends at Donations – Friends of Argyll Estates Archives.
All attendees should book their place by emailing friends@argyllestatesarchives.org Â
