Join us online via Zoom on Wednesday 16 September at 19:30 UK time to hear Bob Reid talk about his research into the 8th Duke’s stewardship of the island of Tiree.
The subject of this short talk is George Douglas Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll (1823–1900), a Scottish aristocrat, politician, intellectual and extensive landowner. His lifetime saw major changes in land use, rising tenant expectations, overpopulation, famine, poverty and the emergence of tenants’ rights.
The talk focuses on how Argyll dealt with the tenants of Tiree during these challenging times. It considers Victorian expectations of how landowners should respond to famine, debt, crime, poverty, overcrowding, and resistance to change, and concludes by assessing Argyll’s stewardship of Tiree against both contemporary standards and the conduct of other landowners.
Speaker Biography
Bob is a native of Dunoon and returned there on his retirement from senior roles in Human Resources in the UK and the Middle East. He is a graduate of Edinburgh and Strathclyde Universities in Social Sciences. Argyll has provided him with many opportunities to pursue his interest in local history. He is a volunteer at Argyll Estates Archives and the Campbell Mausoleum at Kilmun, Argyll. To maintain some balance within his view of the history of Argyll he is also an adviser to Clan Lamont and speaks at their gatherings.
