£10.00

Description

Join us online via Zoom on Friday 13 February 2026 at 10:30 UK time to hear Dr Anna McGregor’s presentation, entitled: ‘Exploring peoples’ historical relationships with native oysters along the west coast of Scotland through an interdisciplinary perspective’.

Anna visited Argyll Estates Archives in 2025 to view some of the documents we have concerning native oysters – more than you might think! The Friends are delighted to welcome Anna back to deliver an online seminar on this fascinating subject, which shows how archival records can have relevance to modern economic sectors, including marine science.

Speaker Biography

Dr Anna McGregor is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Glasgow. Originally working in marine mammal passive acoustics, she completed a MPhil at the University of St Andrews looking at the effect of social structure on individuality in killer whale vocal signatures, and PhD research at Duke University on the cost of locomotion in North Atlantic right whales.

Her more recent research focuses on the use of soundscapes to assess marine habitat quality, alongside understanding the environmental variables influencing native oyster distribution along the West Coast of Scotland, as well as understanding peoples’ past relationships with well-known but underappreciated coastal marine organism.  She is also heavily involved in supporting undergraduate education and effective curriculum design for interdisciplinary learning, while also helping students to develop skills for post-university employment through digital skills and reflective practice.
