Research Guidance

Please contact us to check that we have records that will assist with your research before booking an appointment to visit. We will confirm if there are sources in the collection that may assist you and of any potential difficulties in accessing them, e.g. poor physical condition, language or handwriting. If you are researching your family history, you need to know the names of the people you are looking for, when they were alive and where on the Argyll estate to look for them. Read our Family History Research guidance.

You can identify records which you think may be of interest to you by searching our online catalogue at www.argyll-papers.com.  Please note that the online catalogue currently covers a small percentage of the entire collection.

You can consult the National Register of Archives for Scotland survey, NRAS 1209. It is online here. Enter ‘nras1209’ in the Reference search term box when browsing. Survey NRAS 6 can be consulted in the Historical Search Room at General Register House, Edinburgh. You need to e-mail the Registrar in advance of your visit to request access to a hard copy printout (e-mail: nras@nrscotland.gov.uk).
